The Danville Police Department is pleased to report a historic 40-year low in crime for 2025; as overall crime reduction trends have continued for a sixth year in a row, falling 8% overall across major crime categories in 2025 when compared to 2024.

For major violent crimes, Danville experienced a 28% drop with three murders in 2025 and 85 aggravated assault victims. All three murders are cleared by arrest. Compared to 2024 there were nine murders.

In 2025, Danville had a continued reduction in firearm related shootings, 39 down from 63 the year prior in aggravated assaults. Of those 39, a total of 9 were wounded and 30 were not wounded. Compared to 2024, there were 25 wounded and 38 not wounded. The category of other weapons, defined as anything used to cause bodily harm other than a firearm, fell slightly from 48 to 45.

Robberies continue to decline. There were 15 robberies in 2025 with 12 victim cases cleared by arrest, compared to 22 robberies in 2024 with 15 being cleared by arrest.

In terms of comparison to the national averages determined by the FBI in 2024, the Department’s solve rates far exceed those averages. For 2024, 100% of homicides were cleared by arrest compared to the 61.4% national average. For aggravated assaults, the Department cleared 85.8% of victim’s cases by arrest compared to 49.1% nationally. For robberies, 80% of cases were cleared by arrest compared to 30.4% nationally.

Property crimes continue a historic low trend, falling 6% compared to 2024. Burglaries dropped from 92 in 2024 to 80, with 43% of 2025’s cases being cleared by arrest. The FBI national average is 15.2%.

Additionally, the Department noted that Danville experienced a significant drop in overdoses overall. In 2025, there were 19 overdoses, eight of which were fatal. Compared to 2024, there were 39 overdoses with 13 being fatal.

This data is preliminary and will be finalized in the coming months when the window for reporting updates to 2025 crimes to the Virginia State Police closes.
