(Danville, Va.) — Violent crime is on the decline in Danville.

At a press conference Thursday, Danville Police Chief Scott Booth reported significant declines in violent crime and burglaries during the first five months of this year as compared to the same period last year.

Burglaries are down 38 percent; firearm aggravated assaults are down 70 percent; while the number of murders has dropped 33 percent. 10 of 11 homicides last year have been cleared with arrests, and charges have been filed in two murders this year.

Booth attributes the drop to an increased police presence on the streets and an emphasis on community outreach.

The police chief said he believes Danville is a safer community today.
