The man accused of attacking and setting a Danville City Councilman on fire has pled guilty. Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes pled guilty on Thursday to charges of Attempted First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Malicious Wounding in the attack on Councilman Lee Vogler.

The charge of Breaking and Entering While Armed With a Deadly Weapon was dismissed.

On July 30th 2025, Buck Hayes reportedly entered the office of Showcase Magazine and poured gasoline on Vogler. He then set him on fire.

During the proceedings video of Buck-Hayes being interviewed by Investigator Clay with the Danville Police Department was shown. Buck-Hayes said that he attacked Vogler because he had an affair with his wife 10 months prior.

Buck-Hayes also said that on the morning of the attack he became angry after a phone call with his ex-wife that made him feel rejected. He said he was angry at Vogler because he thought the affair had ended his dream of ever having children.

Buck-Hayes also told the investigator that he put Styrofoam in the gas so that it would burn longer. Vogler suffered burns to 60% of his body and spent just under three months at the UNC Burn Unit.

Vogler and his wife, Blair, were in attendance in the courtroom.

Buck-Hayes will be sentenced on June 25 at 9 am. He is facing up to life in prison.
