The Danville Planning Commission recommended approval last night for a large apartment complex along West Main Street. Sycamore Development Company wants to rezone 14 acres to multifamily residential at 1700 West Main Street.

The project will be 157 acres total. With 14 acres fronting West Main, 10 acres fronting River Oak Drive, and 133 acres fronting Beccan Drive and the Dan River.

The complex would have 204 apartments with 17 buildings, 326 parking spots, a clubhouse and a pool.

The second part of the project would include 24 houses on 10 acres. The planning commission recommended approval on a 4-3 vote. Several neighbors attended the meeting to speak against the project.

Ernest New highlighted concerns about traffic in the area.

“I think we’ve had several telephone poles knocked down, recently an upside down car from an accident, so we’ve got traffic problems,” said New, ” before we get the land we need to figure out how we’re going to move around, we need stoplights up there.”

Danville City Council will vote on the project in March.
