Former South Boston Vice Mayor Tina Younger won the Democratic nomination for the 9th Senate District last night in a narrow vote. Younger edged out Danville Vice Mayor Dr. Gary Miller 89 votes to 82.

Younger will face Senator Frank Ruff’s former legislative aide Tammy Brankley Mulchi, who won the Republican nomination at a mass meeting that went on until early Wednesday morning.

Mulchi defeated Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler, Andy Ferguson, James Edmunds, Kyle Gravitt, and Dale Sturdifen for the nomination.

A special election will be held on January 9th to fill the seat that was previously held by Frank Ruff, who recently announced his retirement.

The 9th Senate District includes all of the counties of Charlotte, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, and Nottoway, as well as parts of the counties of Brunswick, Campbell, Dinwiddie, Halifax, Pittsylvania, and Prince George, and part of the City of Danville.
