Thursday night the Kiwanis Club of Danville gave out their Citizen of the Year Award to none other than WBTM’s own Alex Vardavas. Vardavas has worked for WBTM for his entire career, which he won’t reveal how many years it’s been.

The Chairman of the Selection Committee Rick Barker, discussed what earned Vardavas the award.

“He has been an outstanding citizen not just for years, but for decades and he’s been known for so long now for maybe an extension of his professional career there at the radio station where his brand is reliability and truthfulness and people depend on Alex and he has quite a following,” said Barker. “The longevity, the consistency with the steady drip of continued service over decades. He’s been recognized previously by the VFW Post 647 with their Humanitarian Award. He’s been recognized by the Sertoma Club with their Service to Mankind Award. That and many more things certainly put him in good standing as Citizen of the Year.”

Some of Vardavas’s other accomplishments and service to the community include hosting the March of Dimes Telethon for 31 years after losing his best friend at 15-years-old to Cystic Fibrosis. Alex has also received the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Award.

Vardavas also received a Certificate of Appreciation from US President Gerald Ford for his work in the Selective Services System.

Vardavas was inducted into the Elon University Chapter of the The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi on April 26, 2023. The Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society is the nation’s oldest and most selective honor society.
