RINGGOLD, Va. – The family of 16-year-old Joshua Rone said the teen had looked forward to going to the fair all week. They didn’t know it would be the last night of his life.

Rone, who was an 11th grader at Bartlett-Yancey High School in Yanceyville, North Carolina, was gunned down in the parking lot outside the Danville-Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds at about 11:45 Saturday night.

Rone was on the Bartlett-Yancey football team and had played in their game the night before he was murdered. Caswell County School Superintendent Dr. Sandra Carter said, “He will be greatly missed by students and staff. Please keep the Buccaneer community in your thoughts and prayers.”

An avid sports fan, Rone also worked at the Old Dutch Supermarket in Danville.

Thousands of people were attending the fair when Rone was shot. Emergency responders were unable to save the teenager and Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s investigators have not identified a shooter.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in this case.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with expenses for a memorial service.
