WINTERVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina couple died Saturday evening when their small plane went down not far from their home.

WRAL reports that a husband and wife were killed in a plane crash around 6 p.m. on Saturday in Pitt County.

Alan and Susan Stancill, owners of Stancill’s Wild Game Meat Processing, were involved in an accident while landing near their home, according to a Facebook post. The family said both were “avid sport pilot enthusiasts” who had just finished a successful flight to visit their grandchildren.

The FAA said an unidentified aircraft crashed at the South Oaks Aerodrome Airport in Winterville. The preliminary information reported to the board was that the two people were killed when the Flight Design CTSW airplane crashed near Winterville, North Carolina, just before 6 p.m. Saturday.

No cause was given.

An NTSB investigator arrived at the crash site Sunday afternoon to begin investigating.

An official said the probe is still in the early stage and that “part of the investigation will be to request radar data, weather information, air traffic control communication, airplane maintenance records and the pilot’s medical records.”

Winterville is about 7 miles south of Greenville, North Carolina.
