(Blairs, Va.) – Six families were forced from their homes after a fire at the Northpointe Apartments in Blairs Sunday.

Pittsylvania County fire departments were called to Northpointe Lane about 1 p.m.

On arrival, Blairs firefighters reported heavy fire showing from the front of a multi-story apartment building. The fire was located in building 308. The bottom floor of that building was damaged by the flames.

The Ringgold and Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire Departments responded, along with several ambulances.

There were multiple reports of smoke inhalation and several people were treated at the scene, including a child. There were no reports of serious injuries.

Six apartments suffered fire or smoke damage. The American Red Cross is assisting the residents. Nine people were evacuated.

The Pittsylvania County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire but it’s believed to have been started by a cigarette that was thrown in the mulch. The flames spread to the inside of the building and destroyed three apartments.
