(Pittsylvania County, Va.) — Virginia State Police Trooper C. Simpkins is investigating a fatal crash in Pittsylvania County. The crash occurred Tuesday at 1:34 p.m. on Route 40, west of Route 775, on West Gretna Road.

A 2015 Mazda 5 Sport was traveling east on Route 40 when it ran off the right side of the road and struck head-on a tree.

The 32-year-old female driver from Durham, N.C., was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Two juvenile passengers were also transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

A third passenger, a 5-year-old male, did not survive the crash.

The driver was wearing a seat belt and all three juveniles were secured in child safety seats/booster seats.

The crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending.
