(Ringgold, Va.) – Leaders from Danville and Pittsylvania County gathered Wednesday to mark completion of the Kentuck Solar Project in Ringgold, Va. The area’s first solar operation sits on 76 acres and will provide more than one percent of the power needs for Danville Utilities. The 23,000 solar panels will service 1,200 homes in the Kentuck area annually.

The Kentuck Solar farm has been in the works for three years and the facility breaks records as Virginia’s largest municipal utility solar project.

WGL Energy owns and operates the project. Sol Systems has overseen the design, construction and financing of the system. The City of Danville Department of Utilities will purchase energy from the solar facility for the next twenty-five years.

The project is expected to save millions of dollars in energy costs.
