Last night Danville City Council voted against a special use permit that would have turned a home on West Main Street into a Duplex. The house is located at 491 West Main St.
Multiple residents in that area spoke out against the duplex during the meeting citing concerns about the lack of street parking in the area.
During the discussion members of the council noted that the area has a need for more housing, but Vice Mayor Dr. Gary Miller noted they also need to take parking into consideration.
“My concern is that all over town, I know we’ve got a housing shortage, but people throw up apartments or open up apartments and are not obligated to provide parking and you know there’s no parking, so then you end up with a free for all for parking spaces. If a developer opens up a place he should provide parking for a reasonable number of people,” said Miller.
The council approved a special use permit for a mixed use development at 1224 West Main St. The development will have commercial use on the first floor and residential use for the top floor.
