A severe thunderstorm hit the southside hard on Friday afternoon with damaging straight line winds that caused many fallen trees and some broken utility poles. Due to the damage over 5,000 Danville Utilities customers were left without power.

Some residents were without power for over 24 hours. The last update from Danville Utilities said that as of 9:30 pm Saturday night the majority of customers had their power back.

The outage also affected Sovah Health Danville. A window at the hospital was also reportedly blown out by the storm.

Danville Utilities crews worked through the night on Friday and received assistance from crews from North Carolina.
