(Danville, Va.) — Danville Police Chief Scott Booth on Tuesday released body camera footage following an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead. The video shows the suspect get out his car in a dark wooded area with his back to officers before whirling around suddenly with his hands outstretched.

Booth released the footage after appealing to the community to not rush to judgment about rumors and social media comments regarding the Sunday morning shooting of 25-year-old Juan Markee Jones of Danville. His remains have been sent to Roanoke for an autopsy.

The video shows Jones in a car, ignoring commands to get out. He backs the car away. The video then shows the car pull into a brush-filled area. Jones gets out and doesn’t comply with commands to show his hands. Video shows one officer deploying a stun gun, which police said wasn’t effective. Jones turns around toward police, and shots are fired.

Police say Jones was shot on Sunset Drive after he “suddenly turned in a threatening manner”. Officers tried to use a Taser before he was shot, but it did not make contact. Jones was taken to the hospital where he died. No officers were injured in the incident.
