(Danville, Va.) – Danville Police responded to Southern Street about 7:40 p.m. Monday for a domestic assault. On arrival, officers spoke with the 27 year old female victim who was outside of the home. The victim told police she had been struck in the head and threatened with a handgun by her 28 year old boyfriend, Corey Evan Smith.

Smith, who was inside the residence at the doorway along with 3 small children, began speaking with officers. During the conversation , Smith closed the door, jerking the children inside. Officers could hear Smith barricading the doorway.

Responding officers attempted communication with Smith, who became agitated and verbally aggressive.

Negotiators were called to the scene and began communicating with Smith. They talked with Smith for about an hour, asking him to surrender and to let the children come outside. Smith continued to be agitated and banged on the walls of the residence.

In an effort to yell at the negotiators, Smith extended his upper body out of a window. A Taser was used on Smith and he was taken into custody. The children were unharmed during the incident. After a search of the residence, officers were unable to locate a handgun.

Smith was charged with domestic assault and felony child endangerment.

A protective order was also served on Smith, who is being held at the Danville Jail under no bond.
