(Bedford County, Va.) — An off-duty Bedford County deputy is credited with saving a child’s life after administering CPR at the Smith Mountain Lake State Park beach on Sunday.

Bedford County Sheriff’s Cpl. Sonny Daniels was off-duty on the beach Sunday when he heard a woman screaming as she carried a small child out of the water. The 1-year-old was unresponsive and was not breathing.

Daniels began performing CPR until the child began coughing, crying and breathing on his own. The boy was then taken to the hospital and later released.

The sheriff plans to recognize Cpl. Daniels with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office’s Life Saving Award.
