A true local hero was honored by the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors during its September 17 business meeting.
Jackson Wethington was presented with a Certificate of Excellence for his outstanding bravery and heroism displayed on July 22, 2023, when he rescued two young girls from a dangerous current in the Staunton River at English Park.
Without hesitation, he plunged into the river, bringing them to safety. Wethington also performed CPR on a friend who was swept under the current during the rescue and saved that person’s life.
Wethington was awarded the National Lifesaving Award from the Boy Scouts of America, a rare and prestigious recognition bestowed for acts of valor. Wethington’s actions exemplify the highest ideals of bravery, selflessness, and service to others.
