An inmate died on Wednesday at the Rockingham County detention facility. According to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, at around 7:40 Wednesday morning, a female inmate of the Rockingham County Detention Facility developed an apparent medical emergency and collapsed in her cell.
Upon her arrival, at around 4 am, the inmate was placed in an observation cell and was being monitored by Detention Officers and Medical staff. She showed no signs of distress before collapsing in the cell.
Upon the inmate’s collapse, Detention Officers and Medical staff, along with Rockingham County Emergency Services, immediately provided CPR and other life-saving efforts to the inmate. While Rockingham County Detention Officers, Medical Staff, and Emergency Services personnel were rendering this aid to the inmate, she passed away as a result of her medical emergency. Foul play is not suspected in the inmate’s death.
At the request of Sheriff Sam Page, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted and will perform a follow-up investigation per standard procedure. The name of the individual who passed away is not being released at this time because the next of kin is still being notified.
