On Tuesday night Danville City Council voted to approve a pay raise for Mayor Alonzo Jones and the rest of the members of council. Mayor Jones will see a pay raise from $12,000 to $20,000 a year, while the other members of the city council will jump from $10,000 to $18,000 annually.

Those salaries are the maximum allowed salaries by the state for mayor and council members. The raises will go into effect on July 1, 2025.

Vice Mayor Dr. Gary Miller addressed the pay raise before the vote on Tuesday night and noted the raise would put the council members in line with cities of similar size.

“If you compare us to cities of the same size, which we’re supposed to, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, etc. I find it hard to believe that they work any harder than we have, this council, go to fewer meetings and put in more hours than we do, so I think it’s only fair. My only comment is just judge us on our results,” said Miller.

The vote passed unanimously.
