LYNCHBURG, Va. – Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry McAuliffe has called upon his Republican opponent, Glen Youngkin, to withdrawn from an event billed an “election integrity regional rally” set for next week at Liberty University.

In a statement, McAuliffe said that upon learning of the rally, he has decided to drop out of a debate planned at the Lynchburg school. Mcauliffe said the “Election Integrity” event at Liberty University will be providing Glenn Youngkin with a platform to peddle Donald Trump’s debunked lies and conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.”

The two-day event is scheduled for Aug. 6 and 7 at Liberty University. Youngkin, GOP lieutenant governor nominee Winsome Sears, and attorney general candidate Jason Miyares are all scheduled to appear.

Susan Swecker, chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, called on the 5th District Republicans to cancel the event altogether.

Melvin Adams, the chairman of the 5th District Republicans, told ABC News the party is “not surprised by these tactics.”
