DANVILLE, Va. – Danville city councilman Adam Tomer has announced his resignation from the post, effective July 1.

In a letter to Mayor Alonzo Jones, Tomer said he has “accepted an employment opportunity that will unfortunately not allow me the time or ability to serve the citizens of Danville.”

He has two years remaining on his four-year term.

Tomer said he regretted having to step down, but said he is “extremely proud of the progress we made during my 10 years of serving the community.”

Tomer was first elected to city council in 2006 at age 26. He ran unsuccessfully for a House of Delegates seat, later left the governing body but was re-elected to council.

Incumbent Fred Shanks lost a narrow re-election bid earlier this month and would be the likely candidate named to fill the post until an election is held.

Tomer issued the following statement:

This afternoon I called Mayor Jones to offer my resignation from Danville City Council effective July 1, 2020. I have accepted an employment opportunity that will unfortunately not allow me the time or ability to serve the citizens of Danville. It is with great sadness that I leave my term with still so much work to be done, but I am extremely proud of the progress we made during my 10 years of serving the community.

Whether it’s helping to protect the defenseless animals through anti-tethering ordinances, passing family leave plans that allowed for more bonding time between a parent and a child or questioning frivolous incentive packages while helping guiding the city’s finances, I always tried to put the citizens and their voices first.

Since my time at GW high school, I always dreamed of serving on City Council, I want to thank the citizens for making that dream a reality. In 2006, you gave a no name 26 year old a chance to serve this community and I will forever be grateful.
