(Halifax County, Va.) — The National Weather Service confirms that an EF2 tornado touched down in Halifax County Friday night.

Blacksburg meteorologists in Blacksburg surveyed damage and concluded that it was consistent with a tornado. The tornado reached maximum wind speeds of 125 miles per hour and touched down in some woods near Crystal Hill and Scottsburg before gaining strength and destroying several homes. There were no injuries but the twister left a two-mile path of destruction and one family of five lost everything in the storm.

No disaster declaration will be issued since the damage was to private property. Emergency services officials are working with the families who were affected by the tornado.
