(Bristol, Va.) – A Bristol man was shot and killed after State Police say he raised a shotgun at officers responding to a call about a suicidal man.

The shooting took place about 6 p.m. Monday in Bristol.

According to Virginia Stat Police, the Bristol Police Department received an emergency call reporting a suicidal man at a home on Hillsdale Avenue. Officers entered the home and repeatedly ordered 71-year-old Paul B. Meade to show his hands. Meade refused and, instead, raised his shotgun toward the officers, which is when those officers shot him.

Meade died at the scene and body will be taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke.

The two officers were not injured.
