(Pittsylvania County, Va.) – Virginia State Police say Sunday’s fatal accident on the Riceville Road in Pittsylvania County was most likely the result of a medical condition.

The name of the driver who died in the fiery crash has still not been released because the person was burned beyond recognition. State Police are still awaiting confirmation from the State Medical Examiner’s office in Roanoke.

The accident happened about 4:35 Sunday afternoon near Gretna. According to the trooper who investigated, a 2012 Cadillac SUV was traveling on Riceville Road when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road, struck a brick column, crossed the road and ran off the right side and hit a tree and caught fire. The driver was unable to escape and died at the scene.
