(Danville, Va.) — The man who has served for four years as executive director of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research will retire at the end of the month.
Jerry Gwaltney has led the institute since April 2013 and announced his decision on Monday, effective July 31.
Gwaltney was Danville’s city manager when the institute was established 17 years ago.
Under his leadership, the institute refocused on workforce development, advanced learning and applied research.
The institute’s board of trustees appointed IALR’s director of research, Mark Gignac, to serve as interim executive director starting Aug. 1. The search for a new director will begin immediately.
