(Halifax County, Va.) — A 36-year-old Nathalie woman has been charged with murder in the shooting death of her 71-year-old father.

Sheriff Fred Clark said deputies responded to an incident in the northern end of Halifax County after receiving a 911 call from family members about a domestic shooting on Waller Road in the Nathalie community.

Virginia State Police and sheriff’s deputies responded about 6:30 p.m. and found James H. Thornton lying in the front yard of his home, dead of multiple gunshot wounds.

No other family members were at home at the time, but found Thornton’s body when they returned.

His daughter lives nearby. She had fled the scene but was arrested after deputies located her wrecked Dodge Durango at the intersection of Cody Road and Tobacco Road in Nathalie. The car had flipped over and Shelley Thornton was arrested about 300 yards from the site of the accident.

Shelley Thornton is charged with second-degree murder and firearms counts. She is being held in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail without bond.
