A man has been arrested for a Martinsville murder that happened in November. On November 27 the Henry County Sheriff’s office responded to a reported gunshot victim at Sovah Health.

The victim was identified as 43-year-old Andrae Lamont Matthews of Martinsville. Matthews was transported by helicopter for wounds to his shoulder and cheek. He later died from his injuries. 

Through investigation deputies identified Daryl O’Brian Smith as the suspect. Authorities say a fight happened between Smith and Matthews in a vehicle on William F Stone Highway in the Bassett and Fieldale area of Henry County.

During the fight Smith pulled a gun and shot Matthews, according to deputies. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office performed a thorough investigation that included traveling to Texas to find witnesses. 

Smith was arrested on March 30 for charges of second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held in the Henry County Detention Facility with no bond.
