(Danville, Va.) – Police have identified the man who was shot and killed during an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning as 25-year-old Juan Markee Jones of Danville.
Police were called to the 2300 block of North Main Street just after 1 a.m. to a domestic assault in the parking lot of a business. As the officers were en route to the location, the caller advised that she had fled to escape her attacker. The 22-year-old woman drove to her home in the 200 block of Sunset Drive, but was followed by her attacker who tried to force his way into her residence.
Police responded and found the man and woman outside the home. Physical evidence supported the woman’s allegations of an assault, which gave the officers probable cause to arrest the man.
As they approached, he began walking away from the officers and ignored their repeated commands to stop. He got into a vehicle and drove into a nearby wooded area. He again refused the officers’ commands to show his hands and to exit his vehicle. The man later exited the car but police say he refused to show his hands.
A Taser was used but did not make effective contact. According to police, the man “suddenly turned on the officers in a threatening manner” and officers opened fire.
The officers immediately called for rescue, and the man was taken to Sovah Health, where he was pronounced dead.
No officers were injured during this incident.
In accordance with Danville Police Department policy, the officers have been placed on administrative assignment, and their names will be released in three days.
State Police are investigating the incident.
