FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – 55-year-old Emmitt Darrel Southern of Princeton, West Virginia is behind bars in Virginia, charged in a shooting outside a Franklin County convenience store Monday morning.

Southern was arrested during a traffic stop in Montgomery County. He is charged with malicious wounding and could face additional charges following a shooting at Cannaday’s Store on Virgil H. Goode Highway in Boones Mill.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, Kelly Hall, 49, of Rocky Mount, remains in the hospital, being treated for life-threatening injuries after Monday’s shooting. Investigators say Southern and Hall knew one another.

Investigators have not given a motive in the shooting.
