(Danville, Va.) – Danville firefighters confined a fire to the bedroom of a house on Murphy Circle early Friday.

Firefighters responded to 203 Murphy Circle just before one a.m. Smoke was showing from the front of the single-story house but all seven occupants had gotten out safely.

The fire was extinguished quickly and confined to the bedroom. The first floor suffered extensive smoke and heat damage to all rooms.

During the search of the basement, firefighters located the family dog. The dog was not injured and was given to a neighbor for safekeeping.

The fire was caused by improper use of a cigarette lighter. The lighter set the bedding and bed on fire while four people were in the room.

The Red Cross will be helping the seven occupants and an eighth who was at work.

3 engines, 1 ladder truck and 15 firefighters responded and were on the scene for about two hours.
