DANVILLE, Va. – Just as the Dan River begins to recede, the National Weather Service says that more rain is headed our way. Another front will move into the area with showers developing Monday afternoon. The rain will continue through the night and into Tuesday morning. Rain totals of an inch or less are expected but may cause problems in some areas where the river remains swollen from last week’s downpours.

Another system along the Gulf Coast could bring more rain to the region late Wednesday into Thursday as the cold front pushes through. Temperatures will remain mild throughout the week.

Roads in Danville reopened Sunday, including River Street, as the floodwaters finally began to recede. The water level in the Dan River continued rising Friday night, cresting at 27.18 feet, the highest since Tropical Storm Michael in October 2018 and the third-highest on record. Moderate flood stage is 26 feet. The flood warning continued for much of the weekend.

Severe flooding was reported in the Riverdale area of Halifax County. The river rose to the bottom of the Watkins Bridge, which carries Highway 501 into downtown South Boston. The Dan left its banks, flooding the road leading up to the bridge. Water covered the road all the way down to Highway 501′s intersection with Highway 58-360. Virginia State Police closed the intersection and detoured traffic around the area.

U.S. 501-58 intersection at Riverdale became submerged Saturday afternoon, a day after floodwaters swamped Riverdale businesses on 501. The Dan River crested in South Boston Sunday night. Officials say it was the seventh-worst flood on record.

It was even worse in southwest Virginia. More than 500 residents in and around the town of Richlands, in Tazewell County, were forced from their homes and many had to be rescued from the swiftly rising waters.
