Danville, Va. – Danville is now under a flood warning through Saturday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a flood warning for the Dan River near Danville affecting Caswell and Rockingham Counties in North Carolina; the city of Danville and all of Pittsylvania County; at Paces affecting Halifax County; and for the Dan River at South Boston including Halifax County and Riverdale.

One to two inches of rain has fallen across the headwaters of the Dan River, with another two to three inches likely over the next 12 hours. This will result in river flooding along the Dan River Thursday afternoon, likely lasting into the weekend.

The Dan River is expected to crest at around 25-and-a-half feet between noon and 1:00 Friday afternoon. The river level was at seven feet as of Thursday morning. That would put the Dan River at “moderate” flood stage, possibly affecting areas like Goodyear Boulevard and flood-prone River Street.  Public works crews have installed pumps along River Street in anticipation of the rising water. Major flood stage is 30 feet in Danville.

Do not drive through flooded areas; the water may be much deeper than you think.
