DANVILLE, Va. – Danville will not join the growing list of Virginia localities passing Second Amendment Sanctuary resolutions.

The third time wasn’t the charm for gun rights supporters, who again urged council Tuesday night to pass a resolution stating the city’s support for the right to bear arms. Danville City Council instead voted to stand by the Constitution and not become a Second Amendment Sanctuary city.

Councilman Fred Shanks called for a resolution urging legislators to take no action infringing on Second Amendment rights. Shanks’ resolution stated that council strongly supports rights for law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms and urges the General Assembly and Governor to take no action that would violate it, that the city is a constitutional city, and supports the actions of other elected bodies making similar declarations. It did not pass.

An alternative resolution offered by Councilman Adam Tomer was approved by a unanimous vote.
