DANVILLE, Va. – The Danville Fire Department responded to a fire at 235 Plantation Road at 1:22 Thursday afternoon. Crews arrived within minutes and found a single-story home with fire and smoke showing from the rear of the house.

Heavy flames were shooting from the back of the home when the first trucks reached the scene and additional manpower was requested.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control but the house suffered extensive damage.

A child was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and transported to SOVAH Hospital Emergency Room by the Danville Life Saving Crew.

The cause was determined to be a child playing with fire.

The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
