DANVILLE, Va. – Danville Police say a shooter fled the area after opening fire on Grove Street Wednesday afternoon.

A half-dozen uniformed officers were canvassing the area between Grove and Gay Streets after a 22-year-old man was shot in the arm Christmas Day. An officer on the scene said the man suffered a non-life threatening wound in an incident that happened around 2 p.m. He was taken to the hospital by the Danville Lifesaving Crew.

A portion of Grove Street was closed and roped off with yellow crime scene tape as officers searched a wooded area below the WBTM/WAKG studios with a metal detector.

Officers were still interviewing residents at 4:30 Wednesday afternoon; however, a police spokesman said those living in the area were in no danger. He said police had not arrested a suspect and that the individual “fled the area” immediately after the shooting.

It was not clear whether the shooting happened along Grove Street or inside one of the homes.
