CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Charlottesville’s two statues of Confederate generals have again been vandalized.

Police say they were called to both Market Street Park and Court Square Park early Monday. Two figures on the Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson statue have been further damaged, while other parts of the base had been chipped away.

A piece of paper with “1619” had also been taped over a sign in front of the statue. That date references the first time enslaved Africans arrived in what was then the English colony of Virginia.

Officers later responded to a report of similar vandalism to the statue of Robert E. Lee in Market Street Park.

Both statues park have been vandalized multiple times, often with graffiti. Granite around the base of Lee and Jackson had apparently been chipped away sometime last month, as well.

The Charlottesville Police Department is investigating.
