DANVILLE, VA — 34-year-old Brenda Gomez-Lazarski was sentenced to one year in prison Thursday in the death of her 71-year-old grandmother.
Gomez-Lasarski entered guilty pleas in April to charges of abuse and involuntary manslaughter. She was originally charged with felony homicide and abuse of an incapacitated adult resulting in a death.
Police officers and members of the Danville Life Saving Crew responded to a home at 116 Park Avenue on Aug. 11, 2018 for a report of a woman in cardiac arrest. Dorothy Jean George was found dead in her hospital bed. George suffered from various health issues and her granddaughter was her primary caregiver.
Investigators said her room smelled of urine, she had bed sores, the linens were soiled, and there were bugs in the house.
An autopsy showed George died as a result of neglect.
