(Halifax County, Va.) – A Halifax County woman and her boyfriend have been charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of her 5-year-old son.

31-year-old Tonja Sydnor and 22-year-old Kory Lennon are both charged with second-degree murder and felony child endangerment after her son, Christian Sydnor, died at the emergency room of Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to Sydnor’s home on the Old Cluster Springs Road Monday evening but rescue members met the couple en route to the hospital. Christian Sydnor was transported to the hospital’s ER, where he was later pronounced dead.

The boy’s father said his son was covered from head to toe in bruises. An autopsy confirmed the child died of “blunt force trauma to the head,” according to a statement from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

The 5-year-old graduated from pre-school two weeks prior to his death.
