Henry County, Va.) — A man convicted of keeping a 13-year-old girl prisoner in a dog cage in 2002 was sentenced to life in a Henry County courtroom Wednesday.

According to the Martinsville Bulletin, 44-year-old  Anthony Shamel Hopkins received two life terms for rape and forcible sodomy of a girl he was accused of locking in a 4-foot-square cage.

Judge David Williams also sentenced Hopkins to 50 years in prison on a charge of distributing a controlled substance to a minor.

Hopkins was convicted by a Henry County jury in November. He was also found guilty of distributing drugs to her during that same time period.

A witness said he locked the nearly naked girl in a dog cage for two days, and refused to provide her with food or water.

Hopkins was a leader of the Bloods street gang and has a lengthy criminal record.

The offenses occurred between June and September of 2002.
