At just 16 years old, a local high school student is turning personal tragedy into purpose. After losing her father to glioblastoma two years ago, she has launched a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds for critical brain cancer research—stepping in after learning that government funding for glioblastoma research has significantly declined.
Motivated by the devastating impact the disease had on her family, Sophie Doss, a sophomore at Chatham Hall, along with her sister Taylor, is determined to make a difference where they believe support has fallen short.
“Watching my dad fight glioblastoma was the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced,” said Sophie. “When I learned that funding for research was being reduced, I knew I couldn’t just sit back. I want to help find a cure so other families don’t have to go through what we did.”
Their newly formed nonprofit, The Tommy Doss Initiative: To Boldly Cure GBM. Inc, a nod to their dad’s love of Star Trek, aims to raise awareness and generate funding for innovative glioblastoma research initiatives. The organization will host its first fundraising event Tommy’s Trek on May 15th in Danville, VA bringing together community members, local businesses, and supporters in a shared mission to combat one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.
The May 15th event will include a DJ, food trucks, door prizes, kids run and 5K run/walk with all proceeds going directly toward glioblastoma research organizations and initiatives.
Community leaders and supporters have already begun rallying behind Sophie’s efforts, praising her courage and determination.
“Her strength and initiative are remarkable,” said her mom. “She’s not only honoring her father’s memory but also inspiring an entire community to take action.”
Glioblastoma is an aggressive and often fatal form of brain cancer, with limited treatment options and a high recurrence rate. Increased funding and research are critical to improving outcomes for patients.
Sophie and Taylor hope their nonprofit will grow beyond its first event and continue making an impact for years to come.
“This is just the beginning,” she said. “I want to keep pushing, keep raising awareness, and keep fighting for a cure.”
