Some homes in Danville are currently reporting that they have no water as a Boil Water Advisory is in effect. According to Danville Utilities, are water tanks are currently low.

Speaking at tonight’s City Council meeting, City Manager Ken Larking explained the circumstances that led to the temporary disruption in treated water supply.

“Due to heavy rain and run off into the creeks and streams feeding the Dan River, the water coming into our treatment plant became unusually cloudy, and despite our best efforts, it could not be safely treated to meet quality standards,” Larking said. “For several hours, we were unable to supply the distribution system with treated water meeting the Virginia Department of Health standards for drinking water.”

As a result, water levels and pressure in the City’s storage tanks dropped. Under public health regulations, a boil water advisory must be issued whenever system pressure is lost to protect public safety.

“I know that this is frustrating and inconvenient for residents, businesses, and visitors,” Larking said. “We’re working hard to get the water system back to normal as quickly as we can. We will investigate how this happened so we can improve our processes and prevent it from happening again. Keeping our water supply safe and reliable is our top priority.”

Testing requirements mean the boil water advisory will remain in effect until at least Thursday. The City will notify residents as soon as the advisory is lifted.

Right now, crews are focused on refilling the main reservoir to stabilize the system. Once levels are restored, pumping to affected areas will resume. Most areas are expected to have water by Wednesday afternoon. The boil water advisory remains in effect and, due to required testing, will continue until at least Thursday.
