The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public service announcement regarding ice-covered ponds and lakes. Authorities are urging the public—especially parents and guardians—to take this danger seriously.

Ice that appears solid can be dangerously thin and unstable. What looks safe from the shoreline can collapse in seconds, plunging a person into freezing water. Cold-water immersion can cause immediate shock, involuntary gasping, and rapid muscle paralysis, making it nearly impossible to swim or self-rescue. Even strong swimmers can lose function in under a minute.

Each winter, first responders across the country respond to tragic incidents where people—often children—fall through ice. These incidents frequently result in serious injury or loss of life.

Key Safety Reminders:

• No ice is ever 100% safe.

• Ice thickness varies due to water flow, temperature changes, debris, and sunlight.

• Snow can hide weak spots.

• Pets can also fall through — never attempt a rescue on foot.

If someone falls through the ice:

• Call 911 immediately.

• Do not go onto the ice.

• Use a rope, ladder, or long object from shore if possible.
