(Danville, Va.) — The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a river flood warning for the Dan River near Danville from after midnight Sunday until Thursday evening. Moderate to major flooding is forecast during this time period as a result of rainfall yet to come from Florence.
The past 24 hours have seen rainfall amounts ranging from 0.50 to 2 inches across the river basin, with the highest amounts in the mountains. The next 24 hours will be critical in determining the severity of the flooding, according to the National Weather Service. Should the rainfall amounts that occur be lower, flood levels will also be less, and conversely, if the rainfall amounts are higher, then flood levels could exceed these forecasts. Updates will be made as necessary.
The flood stage for the Dan River near Danville is 17 feet. Current projections show the river rising above this stage overnight and continuing to rise to near 28.2 feet by Tuesday morning. This crest compares the level of 28.65 feet recorded on Sept. 7, 1996, during Hurricane Fran.
At 9 a.m. today, the stage was 7.6 feet in Danville.
