Last night Danville City Council recognized members of the Danville Police Department that recently received award. Sergeant Richard P. Wright, Officer Zakary P. Clay, Officer Deandre J. Edmonds, Officer David A. Guido Flores, and Officer William G. Headley received the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police Lifesaving Award.
The Danville Police Department praised the officers in a post on Facebook:
In February, an officer with the Danville Police Department was conducting a follow-up investigation related to a hit-and-run incident. During this encounter, it became clear that the individual involved was experiencing a mental health crisis and needed immediate intervention. While the officer compassionately worked to facilitate transport to the Crisis Center, the suspect—without warning—produced a firearm and opened fire. The officer was struck six times during the sudden and violent exchange, including five rounds to her legs and one to her lower abdomen. Despite the severity of the injuries and the element of surprise, the officer courageously returned fire.
What distinguishes this incident is the high degree of composure, coordination, and courage these officers demonstrated in the face of immediate danger and overwhelming uncertainty. They not only worked as a cohesive team under intense stress but did so with compassion, professionalism, and a clear focus on their sworn duty to protect life—regardless of the individual involved. Their conduct during this incident reflects a steadfast commitment to the sanctity of life and the public trust we are all sworn to uphold. The physical and emotional stress of responding to an officer-down call—while also being tasked with preserving the life of the individual responsible—cannot be overstated. In this harrowing moment, these five officers rose above the gravity of the situation, prioritizing care and calm where panic could have easily taken hold. Their individual and collective actions not only saved lives, but they also brought honor to the law enforcement profession, their badges, and the Danville Police Department.
