The City of Danville has officially announced the development of a Whitewater Channel at 424 Memorial Drive. The Whitewater Channel is being designed by Olympic kayaker and whitewater engineer Scott Shipley.

Danville Parks and Recreation says the transformative project will breathe new life into the historic canal and create a world-class outdoor recreation destination in Danville.

The channel will feature adjustable whitewater elements for all skill levels, from beginners to Olympic athletes, along with public access points, spectator areas, and connections to the Riverwalk trail.

On Tuesday, Danville City Council held a first reading for a budget appropriation ordinance  for a $2 million grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development – Industrial Revitalization Fund for the Whitewater Channel.  A local match of $4 million is required for the grant. 

The Whitewater Channel is scheduled to open in 2027.
