The Pittsylvania Circuit Court has appointed Ron Merricks to serve as interim Treasurer until a special election is held November 4.
The winner of that race will serve the remaining two years of former Pittsylvania County Treasurer Vincent Shorter’s term. Shorter resigned his position June 30 to serve as Pittsylvania County Administrator.
Merricks is a native of Pittsylvania County and grew up in the Mt. Hermon area. He served as Chief Financial and Facilities officer at Chatham Hall for 33 years, retiring in 2018. He has also assisted his son with his business, JW Squire Co., Inc., as secretary and treasurer for several years. Merricks served on the County’s Board of Zoning Appeals for 23 years, where he held the positions of chairman and vice chairman during his tenure.
Merricks oversees a staff of 10 in the Treasurer’s office and wants to keep the office running efficiently and effectively until a new Treasurer is elected.
Merricks lives in Keeling with his family where he enjoys spending time on the farm and riding his horse. He is an active member of Kentuck Baptist Church, having served as the church’s choir director for many years.
