A woman that was arrested for second degree murder in Danville has been ruled not competent to stand trial for now. Jeanette Staton was arrested on March 10, 2025 after Danville Police executed a search warrant at a residence and found 78-year-old Arvel Shrewsbury dead.
Staton told a family member that she had killed Shrewsbury over a week before his body was found. Staton was the caregiver for Shrewsbury.
She and Shrewsbury reportedly got into an altercation that led to her pushing him down the steps. Staton then struck Shrewsbury in the head with a piece of wood and locked him in the basement.
Staton’s attorney says that she is currently unable to understand the court proceedings due to her mental health. On Tuesday a judge ordered Staton to undergo impatient treatment in hopes that she’ll be able to proceed with the trial after receiving treatment.
