The Danville Adult Detention Center (ADC) held their second Alpha Program graduation ceremony on Wednesday at the Danville Police Department. Four inmates graduated from the program.
Alain Mulumba, Brian Thomasson, Markey Newman, and Anthony Slade completed the intensive program in partnership with Danville Pittsylvania Community Services (DPCS) and the Danville Police Department. The four graduates shared testimonials about their experiences in the program, demonstrating their courage and commitment.
Alpha is an intensive substance use treatment program within a modified therapeutic community located inside the Adult Detention Center. The program assists individuals with services and support that are essential to developing skills necessary to return to the community drug free and to avoid reincarceration. Alpha is a program that teaches individuals the skills of accountability, honesty, responsibility, and consistency and is committed to leading individuals to obtain and maintain a lifestyle of sobriety and recovery.
Carrington Chambers, Lead Clinician, DPCS, discussed the program’s objectives, highlighting the hard work and support she witnessed over the past five months.
Director Beasley had word of encouragement, “When individuals are engaged in education, productive activities, and therapeutic services, tension decreases, respect increases, and growth become possible. That doesn’t happen without a committed team and I’m proud to say we have one. To our graduates: your efforts matter, your progress is real, and your future is yours to shape. It is up to you. You have proven that change is possible even in the toughest circumstances.”
The keynote address was delivered by the Honorable James J. Reynolds. Judge Reynolds stated, in part, he has been in this field for many years and was encouraged to see that inmates at the Danville Adult Detention Center are being offered programs that provide meaningful opportunities to change their behavior. He emphasized that simply warehousing individuals is not a solution. The judge also expressed strong support for the graduates’ continued success, Danville Pittsylvania Community Services, the Danville Police Department, and the staff at the Danville Adult Detention Center.
