The Virginia State, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem Field Office, is investigating an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) which resulted after a traffic pursuit in Pittsylvania County.

The incident occurred on Monday, at 12:31 am after a Virginia State Trooper located the suspect vehicle traveling north on Route 29, in which the Sheriff’s Office had placed a BOLO. The 2018 Ford Fusion was involved in an earlier pursuit with Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office and was able to evade the deputy.

The vehicle was located by a Trooper assigned to Pittsylvania County and the Ford continued to flee. The trooper used Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) and disabled the vehicle, on Deerview Road. The suspect produced a rifle while inside the vehicle and fired on the trooper. The trooper returned fire striking the suspect.

The suspect was identified as Jacob Wesley Adkins, 25, of Hurt, Va. Adkins died at the scene.

The Virginia State Police Trooper sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and with assistance from Pittsylvania Sheriff’s Office Deputies, the trooper was transported to Centra Gretna Medical Center and treated for his injuries.

The Virginia State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem Field Office at the completion of the investigation will turn the findings over to the Pittsylvania Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review.
