The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a notice regarding a growing financial crime known as ATM Jackpotting.
ATM Jackpotting occurs when criminals gain physical access to an ATM and install malicious equipment or software. Once the machine is compromised it can be manipulated to dispense large amounts of cash often emptying the machine. These incidents are more common at standalone or less secured ATMs such as those found at retail locations or in remote areas.
Offenders often disguise themselves as technicians to avoid suspicion. Using specialized tools or malware they override the ATM security measures. Once inside the system they trigger the machine to jackpot allowing it to release cash on command.
Your personal bank account information is not the target and the crime affects the ATM machine itself
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to stay alert and report suspicious activity including:
- Individuals opening ATM panels or tampering with machines
- People wearing technician style clothing without proper identification
If an ATM appears damaged or altered do not use it. Notify the bank immediately.
Anyone having information related to this activity or any suspicious incidents involving ATMs is asked to contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at 276 638 8751
